Appenzeller Show Cheese Dairy Co-operative
The Appenzeller Show Cheese Dairy is a co-operative of various agricultural organisations, including
the milk producers of the foundation “Fonds für Appenzeller Käse”, the Organisation of Varieties
of Appenzeller Cheese, milk suppliers, and the cantons of AI and AR. The Show Cheese Dairy aims to give fans of Appenzeller cheese a clear insight into the production of the strongest cheese in Switzerland. The Appenzeller Show Cheese Dairy was opened in April 1978.
Idea and Intention
The Central Association of Swiss Milk Producers has always endeavoured to promote dairy products in mountainous regions. In October 1969 the Central Association approached the Milk Association of St Gallen-Appenzell with proposals for expanding the production of Appenzeller cheese, and supported the initiative of the Milk Association of St Gallen-Appenzell to establish a Show Cheese Dairy.
The intention of this group was to create an Appenzeller Show Cheese Dairy which would offer Swiss people as well as foreign visitors the opportunity of seeing for themselves, in the midst of typical Appenzell scenery, just how hygienically, bacteriologically and technically irreproachable the manufacture of Appenzeller cheese is.
